Action – The catalyst of change….

 

I’m often in a position to talk to people who want a change in theirs lives. Either they have had enough of the way things are and they want to stop doing a lot of things…. Or things are going well and they want to make things better… in either case one thing tends to be clear is that  people do what works for them… and only what works. If they are getting some bad results or results they aren’t liking… those results are getting something for them at a deeper level…

 

Regardless of which situation you are in… wanting or hoping for things to change won’t get you very far….Let’s think about this… all the times you’ve wanted something to happen and done nothing to bring it into existence…. What’s happened?? Probably nothing…

 

And conversely…

 

The times when you’ve wanted to bring something into existence and you’ve taken action as soon as you decided you wanted that thing what has happened?? Probably a lot more.

 

There is a simple formula that is very useful to remember.

 

Belief + Action = Success.

 

By taking action we give energy to the thing we desire, we begin making it real and our mind uses all of it’s resources to bring together the resources in order to make it happen. By taking simple steps day after day you will rapidly get what you want happening in your life.

 

This is why journaling keeping a diary, having a plan on how to get what you want is so important. It should also be noted that while taking massive action can produce immediate results… taking small steps consistently can also yield immediate results and more sustainably in the long run.

 

Practical Exercise… for the attainment of your goals and dreams…

 

Write out something you want or something  you have hoped for in… write it done making it as vivid as you possibly can… Then  get out your diary… and write done a list of practical steps you can take over, one bit at time over the next 3 weeks that will move you towards the achievement of your outcomes. Then over the next three weeks do each step and tick them off…

 

An interesting thing will happen to you as you think about your outcomes over the 3 weeks. They will become more vivid and more real with each step. It’s like you are creating your reality with each step… until you have reached the point you wanted to arrive at and you have what you want….

Perisistance

 

I was talking to someone recently that had an amazing story. They had found themselves in a remarkable situation that involved working very hard over a long period of time. After several years of doing this they choose to move on and had a tremendous financial reward for that effort. Within the space of several months that was taken away through an unfortunate legal action. In the blink of an eye he lost millions... and what did he do?


He started again and is back to where he wanted to be after a number of years. He didn't lie down and complain about how terrible it was or poor him or anything else. He got on with the job and persistantly applied himself to the task at hand to achieve the outcome that he wanted.


Persistant action produces persistant results.

By now quite a few people’s new years resolutions will already have died a death of neglect and things are into the routine of the way they normally are. The change that has been desired has been swallowed up in the routine of day to day.  Most people have gotten back into the swing of doing what they’ve been doing.

 

As the saying goes, “if you do what you’ve always done you’ll get what you’ve always gotten, if you want a different result you have to get something different”

 

So the new year is cranking along and the desire for things to change is still there. Yet you don’t quite know how or you need a bit of hand. Well, NLP is the most powerful vehicle for change available today. So here are a number of tips to make this year better than last year. This is what I do to make sure for myself and my clients they keep on getting better and better.

 

Have a set of outcomes

 

This may sound a bit redundant or weird but a lot of people don’t know what they want or they only focus on what they don’t want. As Aristotle said 3000 years ago ( and it’s still true today) man who aims at nothing will surely achieve it.  So you have to have targets to aim at. They need to be SMART targets, this was explained in a previous newsletter but can be explained by attending one of our training programs. They need to be written down and be something that you really really want. One you have the outcomes set you can go about getting them and bring all of your resources to bear, both conscious and subconscious onto the problem of getting what you want.

 

 

Have a plan


Someone once said if you fail to plan you plan to fail. In order to get what you want, you need to develop a plan on how to get it. Most of the time that plan changes and you end going about getting what you want in a very different way to what you thought you would but the process of setting out a plan is a very important one. It directionalises you effort and gets your subconscious working towards.

 

Take one step at a time


Rome

was not built in a day and the successes you have had in the past weren’t either. As you look back at the things that you’ve achieved that you’ve wanted to achieve. You’ve probably dreamed it up, thought or had the belief that I can do that….AND taken the action steps you’ve needed to take in order to bring that into your reality.  This is most succinctly put in the equation below.

 

Belief + Action = Success

 

If at some level you don’t believe that you can achieve it then the way to your outcome will be slower. There are many great tools for belief changes in the NLP toolbox which are really handy to learn.

 

 

Mediate/ focus session on your outcomes

Focussing on what you want from the perspective of already having it will allow you to remember why you want it in the first place. If you do this for 10-20 minutes a day consistently you won’t have any problems with motivation in taking the steps to achieve your outcomes.

Notes from the NLP coach.

 

Readiness.

 

I was coaching someone recently and they were making good progress towards their goals and then things slowed down a bit. The mechanisms of sabotage kicked in and they continued doing a behaviour that they didn’t want to do.  They weren’t ready for the change and still desired the problem greater than they desired the solution to the problem.

 

It’s useful to remember, that a problem will continue only as long as the desire for the problem is greater than the desire for the solution. If you want a problem to go away you need to make the solution much better or the problem much worse before change becomes possible.

Clarity, the driving force of achievement…

 

As someone who works with people to assist them towards living the life of their dreams, I’m constantly surprised how stuck in daily patterns and the run of the mill experiences that every body has. We all have to do the washing and go to work, cook dinner, vacumn the carpet, do the banking, pay the bills… etc etc etc  All these things are part of everyday life. And often we can get lost in thinking about those things without taking a look at the big picture…

 

One of the first questions I ask anyone who is either interested in NLP or in a coaching context and one of the most powerful question you can ever ask yourself is….

“What do you want?”

 

I am constantly surprised by the responses people say when I ask them that question and it seems such a simple thing. Yet many  people are either unable to say what they want or they seem only able to talk about what they don’t want…

Responses often vary from “ I don’t want x and I don’t want y and I don’t want…” to I don’t know… to “Well I think I know but I’m not sure…”

 

There is often a lack of clarity to what people want or even worse, they know exactly what they don’t want and focus on that…

 

But as I’ve discussed in previous Fusion NLP newsletters what you focus on grows. I’ll say it again because it is really really important, what you focus on grows. This law is as immutable as gravity.  It is always operating all the time it never takes a break and it operates with absolute precision. What you are getting in your life is occurring with absolute precison.

 

The subconscious mind operates with absolute precision.


If you give it an instruction, it will give you the outcome you want from that instruction with absolute precision…

 

For example, in my last NLP practitioner training to demonstrate this I gave my assistant an instruction while they were in trance to carry out a command at precisely 1440 minutes time and to forget the instruction when they emerged from trance.  1440 minutes later, which just happens to be 24 hours, they carried out the command precisely.

 

This was a clear instruction clearly delivered and it was carried out precisely.


 Your subconscious mind is doing this all the time, 24 hours a day 365days a year and it never ever stops.

 

 

So,  if you ask it to get a clear outcome it will assist you to get a clear outcome. If you focus on what you don’t want, it will get you what you don’t want precisely. If you focus on an unclear outcome you will get unclear results.

So to get what you want you need to be very clear about it… You need to know what it is what you want… how will it look, what will you be saying to yourself, how will it feel and how good will it be to have that… you need to know those things intensely… you need to feel what it would be like strongly as if you all ready had it… you need to hear clearly what it would be like to have it… you need to be able to see in bright colors clearly how it will look to have what you want…. from the perspective on already having had it in your life…. From that perspective you will be able to know clearly how good how motivating it will be… you will know just how exciting it will be and you will know what you need to do in order to bring it into you life.

 

Practical Exercise…

 

Sit down with a piece of paper and pen and write down what you want in terms of SMART outcomes. This was covered in a previous newsletter. Once you have that outcome take some time say 10 minutes to get into the experience of what it would be like to have that in your life from the perspective of already having achieved it and what it would be like then. see what you’d see, in bright colors, clear images, hear what you would say to yourself… and most importantly, feel intensely how good it would feel to have this…

 

If you do this on a regular basis this will massively motivate you towards the life of your dreams and it will massively motivate you to take the steps necessary to bring what you want into your life..

Celebration.

 

So often when I work with someone to acheive their outcomes they in a short period of time achieve thier outcomes. Then there comes the what next mind set.... what do I do now that I have what I want? The answer is pretty simple... CELEBRATE....That's right throw a big party or have a quiet celebration with someone special. This is so important. You have acknowledge the milestones that make the journey worth while. Acknowledging the journey and the steps you have taken allows the next journey to be more lightly undertaken.


I would like to wish each and everyone a happy Australia day. I hope you celebrate Australia day in the way that you feel is most appropriate for you and that make you better appreciate this wonderful remarkable place that we call home.

Why 98% of New Years Resolutions fail! ...

Why 98% of new years resolutions perish.

 

There was a studied carried out in the US into new years resolutions. A group of people were studied to determine the effectiveness of their new years resolutions. A stunning 2% of new years resolutions were carried out upon. Why is this so?

 

Thinking about that for a moment… collectively many people at one point in time all decide that they want change in their lives and only 2% make that change effective and follow through on that decision… So what goes wrong? Why don’t people get the change they want and carry that through into the new year?

 

There a number of tendencies of the human mind that mitigate against they type of resolutions most people make. A fundamental tendency of the human mind is to notice what is different but do what is familiar. It tends to see what is familiar as being positive.

 

These tendencies are powerful evolutionary survival mechanisms that greatly assist ongoing survival of the species.

 

So, when a new years resolution is decided upon the subconscious mind considers the resolution and looks at what it’s done in the past. If the new years resolution is to lose weight, a number of things happen.

 

The subconscious mind looks at what has happened in the past, ie experienced a lot of pleasure from eating and an emotional payback (positive things) and considers the alternative as ebodied by the resolution and the familiar wins out.

 

A lot of new years resolutions are about losing things and stopping things. Noone likes to lose anything. In order to be motivated by something we need to be motivated but the positive not the negative. Gaining vibrant health and energy is much more motivating than losing 10 kilos isn’t it?.

 

Some people carry out their new years resolutions for a while and then they trip over themselves and can’t keep it up.

 

The human mind is supremely impressed with effort and clarity of outcomes. It will get you everything you want with absolute precision. However you have to be very specific about the outcomes that you want and put in the effort to make it real. This will be the subject of my next newsletter but for you need to be specific about your outcomes. The more specific you are the more likely you are to get your outcome.

 

In NLP we teach the SMART well formed conditions of outcomes. If an outcome is well formed you are much more likely to achieve that outcome. The acronym SMART stands for:

  • S- specific. You need to know specifically what the outcome will be like, how will having it feel, how will it look, what will you be saying to yourself when you get it.
  • M – Measureable – you need to have a measurement tool to see when you have the outcome of not.
  • A- achievable. It needs to be within the realms of possibility.
  • R – Realistic/resources. You need to have the resources to be able to achieve it or least they are within reach/possible and the outcome is realistic.
  • T- Time/towards.  An outcome needs to have a time limit and it need be a positive to work towards. You can’t achieve a don’t.

 

So by having SMART outcomes that you focus on. You massively increase the likelihood of achieve the change you want if you’ve made a new years resolution.

 

Practical Tool to get you the results you want:

 

If you have made your new years resolutions, take a couple of minutes to write them out as SMART outcomes. Consider all the things above and then write them out and put them on a piece of paper somewhere where you will see them each day. Doing this tells your subconscious that you are serious and your subconscious will work harder to get you what you want in unexpected ways.

NLP Coaching

Some notes from the NLP Coach.

Over and over again, when coaching people with various needs I see the tendency of the mind to re-present problems for resolution until they are resolved.


However, each time a problem is represented it is done in a more forceful manner.

 

Someone I was talking to recently had a goal that they wanted to play netball for the Australian time. She is a very determined person and worked very hard and trained very had and by the time she was 21 she was representing Australia at netball. An amazing achievement. Immediately afterwards she began having one injury after another until several years later she was forced to retire. When I talked her about this, she said that after the national anthem was played she said to her self… I’ve done it now. And her subconscious was listening.

 

So, if something keeps coming up like getting injuries or anything repetitive that can be loosely classed as a problem, this is occurring for a reason.


Once you uncover the reason you can let it go and the problem will stop occurring.
